Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program engagement
Note:
The Fisheries and Oceans Canada Talk Fish Habitat engagement platform closed in March 2026. Welcome to the Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program (FFHPP) engagement page. Here you'll find information on engagement activities, what we heard reports, and links to our most recent and finalized documents.
FFHPP works with Indigenous Peoples, partners and Canadians to inform planning and decision making. This includes all those interested in conserving and protecting fish and fish habitat.

Engagement with Indigenous Peoples
We aim to build a strong foundation of trust and collaboration with Indigenous Peoples by:
- sharing information early and clearly
- collaborating on monitoring and data
- ensuring transparency in processes and decisions
- using integrated planning tools
- incorporating Indigenous Knowledge
- meaningfully engaging and consulting
These steps help build long-lasting relationships, support reconciliation objectives, and support sustainable and respectful ecosystem management.
We are committed to honouring Aboriginal and Treaty rights and working with Indigenous Peoples in a respectful, transparent and collaborative way. This includes following United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (UNDA) principles, such as free, prior and informed consent (FPIC), to ensure meaningful involvement in decisions that affect their communities and territories. We engage early in planning and decision making to create a collaborative environment where Indigenous voices help shape our policies and practices. This includes sharing clear and accessible information about projects and improvements to our processes.
Funding to support Indigenous participation in engagement may be available through the Indigenous Habitat Participation Program.
