Step 8: Implement remediation/risk management strategy

In Step 8, the remediation/risk management (R/RM) strategy developed during Step 7 is implemented. Implementing the R/RM strategy should reduce the potential or existing risks to humans and the environment to an acceptable level.

How to prepare

• identify if there are any physical activities, as defined in the Designation of Physical Activity under the Impact Assessment Act, in the project description. If identified, there may be a requirement for a federal impact assessment (IA) in accordance with the Impact Assessment Act.

• identify any other IA regimes (e.g., provincial, territorial)
• identify timing for all works, undertakings or activities to ensure consistency with DFO's timing windows for work taking place in or near water
• ensure that all proposed work is in compliance with DFO-related legislation and that required permits are in place
• review regulatory decisions associated with the site

What to do

• conduct a baseline sampling program
• implement a risk management plan (RMP) and/or remedial action plan (RAP)
• maintain proper documentation, quality control, and good communication with stakeholders
• select appropriate contractors for the R/RM work
• follow planning guidance for measures to protect fish and fish habitat and standards and codes of practice
• comply with regulatory requirements (e.g., impact assessment legislation, Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act)
• implement an environmental management plan that includes mitigation and monitoring requirements, potential for accidental events, and contingency planning.
