Specific Initiatives

Canada has been evaluating biodiversity indicators in the CBMP-Marine Plan to identify those likely to be of greatest value nationally. A Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat report Science Advice for Identifying Indicators for Monitoring Arctic Marine Biodiversity in Canada, together with supporting Research Documents Arctic Marine Biodiversity: Indicators for Monitoring Coral and Sponge Megafauna in the Eastern Arctic and Development of Indicators for Arctic Marine Biodiversity Monitoring in Canada were released in 2012, following a meeting of Canadian experts to evaluate indicators for monitoring Arctic marine biodiversity in Canada.

One of the unique features of the CBMP-Marine Plan is its emphasis on discovering and utilizing existing data, collections, and other information to monitor Arctic marine biodiversity. To establish baselines from past decades, Canada is identifying and rescuing historical non-digitized datasets and promoting greater access and interoperability of datasets. The CBMP is collaborating with the Polar Data Catalogue (PDC), which houses meta-data and some datasets. In 2012, 41 Canadian legacy meta-datasets were added to the PDC.

ITK is assisting with the Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) component and work has been undertaken to “rescue” and foster the use of TEK in implementing the plan.
