Small craft harbours across Canada are managed and maintained mostly by more than 5,000 volunteers across the country, in collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
Harbour authorities are essential to the smooth operation of fishing harbours, they:
- provide essential services to harbour users
- keep harbour facilities tidy and in good repair
- develop and enforce rules and harbour policies
- allocate berthage and collect fees from users to reinvest in the harbour
- participate in the good management of the harbour authority
- represent the needs of users at the community level
