Restoration action dashboard: Ontario and Prairie Region
DFO’s Ontario and Prairie Region worked alongside Indigenous communities, federal and provincial governments and the restoration community using the approach laid out in Framework to Identify Fish Habitat Restoration Priorities to identify fish and fish habitat:
- restoration goals (long-term outcomes for species, areas or ecosystem functions)
- restoration actions (specific localized activities which contribute to a restoration goal)
Acknowledgement
DFO acknowledges that we work and live on the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary lands and waters of Indigenous Nations across Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Indigenous Peoples are the original caretakers and knowledge keepers of these lands and waters, including the world’s largest freshwater system. We recognize their contributions to stewardship, governance, and environmental knowledge. All aspects of the environment are connected, and by working toward shared restoration goals, we can address the growing challenges of habitat loss and degradation.
Disclaimer
The restoration actions depicted have been assembled from multiple sources and have not received regulatory approvals from DFO or other federal or provincial authorities. Discussions with DFO and, if applicable, other relevant authorities are advised to determine their applicability to specific regulatory instruments, such as offsetting or habitat banking. These actions are not shovel-ready projects and will likely require feasibility assessments—including Indigenous engagement, property access, socio-economic and climate resiliency considerations —along with planning, permitting, and design before implementation. Additionally, the restoration actions that appear are not an exhaustive list of all opportunities in the region.
This mapping tool is for general guidance only. Due to the nature of dynamic systems and the resolution/accuracy of these data sets, restoration action sites as displayed on the mapping tool may not align exactly with natural watercourses or restoration locations. If discrepancies occur, refer to the location details in the associated information box. For more information or if you would like to add additional restoration action sites to the dashboard please contact DFO.OPIP-PIOP.MPO@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.

While acknowledging and respecting the greater whole, these goals and actions are focused to address DFO’s fish and fish habitat responsibilities as outlined in the Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act, and DFO policy.
Fish and fish habitat restoration actions documented in this dashboard have been assembled from literature reviews and engagement. They can be used by:
- organizations or individuals funding restoration to inform planning and project selection
- resource managers considering impacts on fish and fish habitat when planning developments
- proponents looking for potential fish and fish habitat offset projects
- DFO to support decision-making related to conservation and protection of fish and fish habitat
If you already selected, or wish to select, a restoration action from the dashboard, please contact DFO.OPIP-PIOP.MPO@dfo-mpo.gc.ca for further information.
