Standardized CPUE indice development for the estuary and northern gulf of
St. Lawrence snow crab

By Bourdages, H. and/ et Dufour, R.

Abstract

The catch rates (CPUE) for the Estuary and northern Gulf of St. Lawrence snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) commercial fishery were standardized. The standardization process evolved in two stages. In the first stage, the relation between CPUEs and soak time was modelized, and a relative fishing capacity for each activity was estimated. In the second stage, CPUEs corrected for soak time were analyzed using a multiplicative model. This process allowed for the production of standardized chronological catch rate indices for the five traditional areas of fishery. These indices consider the variability induced by long-term changes in the type of traps used and their soak time, as well as by the period and duration of the fishing season.
