Catch and effort data used in the assessment of herring populations in the southern Gulf of St Lawrence

By G.A. Poirier

Abstract

Gillnet catch and effort data were analysed to construct catch rate series for the spring and fall spawning components of southern Gulf of St. Lawrence herring. Catch rate series used in recent assessments do not include information from all areas in the southern Gulf. New series were constructed using all available data, and those which resulted in population trends similar to ones from the most recent assessment, when used as a calibration index in ADAPT, were chosen for each spawning component.
