The Status of Yellowtail Flounder in NAFO Division 4T in 1998.

By G. Poirier and R. Morin

Abstract

Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence groundfish surveys indicate the abundance of yellowtail flounder in NAFO 4T has been fairly stable since 1985 at a level near the historical (1971-1998) average. Reported landings of yellowtail have been variable but for the last 4 years have been at a fairly high level compared to the mean since 1960. A large landing of 800 tonnes in 1997 coincided with a decrease in the abundance index, as well as a shift toward smaller fish in the surveys for 1997 and 1998. A TAC of 300 tonnes for yellowtail landed in the Magdalen Islands was imposed for 1998. Limited data on catch per unit of effort in the commercial fisheries indicate a decrease in 1998 compared to 1997. Relative fishing mortalities at length are much larger for 1997 than for 1995, 1996, and 1998.
