Zonal Workshop to Review Stock Assessment Models for Northern Shrimp; April 27-28, 2010

Chairperson: B.P. Healey
Editor: K.R. Skanes

Summary

A workshop to review stock assessment models for Northern shrimp was held in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador on April 27-28, 2010. The main objective of the workshop was to evaluate operating models for testing harvest control rules that will be used in a management strategy evaluation process to evaluate Northern shrimp stocks. As a beginning step, the process is to be completed for shrimp fishing area 6, which has the most comprehensive data, then extended to other shrimp fishing areas. Scientists and experts from across Canada, and one expert from Norway, attended the workshop to present and review two proposed models. This report summarizes the two model presentations, a presentation on shrimp stocks in shrimp fishing area 6 and as well a presentation regarding management strategy evaluation. Abstracts of all the presentations, and discussions invoked by them, are documented here. Workshop conclusions and the difficulties and steps involved in moving forward are also included.
