Transcript

Tallurutiup Imanga is a birthplace and refuge for nearly all species in the eastern Arctic. It has sustained Inuit for generations through its rich biodiversity and abundant wildlife.

In 2019, an agreement was signed between Inuit and Canada to create the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area. All the partners agreed to support fishing and wildlife harvesting in the five communities neighbouring Tallurutiup Imanga.

Specifically, in Article 16 of the Tallurutiup Imanga Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement, they agreed to:

  • explore sustainable fishing opportunities,
  • listen, learn and gain an understanding of the marine ecosystem, including fish populations, distribution, and abundance,
  • and support collaborative partnerships.

The Government of Canada and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association will provide an opportunity for communities to:

  • highlight priorities for fisheries,
  • share knowledge and information,
  • and learn about the support available from various organizations.

Communication will be ongoing and plans will be developed collaboratively, based on community priorities and needs.

We will:

  • build off previous and ongoing projects,
  • minimize duplication of efforts,
  • and work together on new opportunities.

By working together, we will help realize the decades of work and vision of Inuit leaders who advocated for the protection of Tallurutiup Imanga while seeking a sustainable conservation economy for present and future generations.
