Visual surveys of salmon streams and bio-sampling after spawning
Watch how we take measurements to assess the health of Pacific salmon stocks coming back to their natal rivers to spawn as a reflection of how the different salmon populations are doing. These samples are analyzed to determine the age and genetic composition of the populations that are in the particular river we are sampling. There are over 9000 salmon populations in BC.

Visual Surveys of Salmon Streams and Bio-sampling after Spawning
Aircraft are used in some locations to help count fish from the air
Aircraft are also used to assess fishing pressure – how many people are fishing?
In smaller streams, Salmon are counted manually by crews walking along them
After spawning, researchers take bio-samples from fish for further studies
The 'otolith' bone provides an accurate means to determine the age of the salmon
