Our vast land is full of lakes and rivers, enjoyed by those who navigate them. But did you know your watercraft could carry some unwelcome passengers: aquatic invasive species!

To prevent spreading them from one body of water to another, follow these three simple steps, as demonstrated by our invasive species prevention team: clean, drain and dry.

Clean thoroughly every part of your watercraft that’s been in contact with water, ideally using hot water. This includes everything that touched the water, such as the motor, hull, deck and trailer.

Remove all vegetation, debris, and visible mud from your boat.

Make sure to drain all the water from each compartment, including the tanks, bilge, and live wells, and any other areas containing water. Check every corner of your boat. Aquatic invasive species are often found in tight, less visible spaces.

Dry your equipment carefully to remove any remaining water inside and outside the watercraft.

The best option? Let it dry completely under the sun.
