State of the Oceans - Belugas

Transcript: State of the Oceans - Belugas

[Narrator]

Beluga whales swim and dive to feed, rest, and navigate through their environment.

We've learned that beluga in the western Canadian Arctic change their movements in response to different habitat conditions.

Their dive behavior changes depending on where they are, the time of the year, and the amount of sea ice that is around them.

They use different dive patterns to search for different types of food during different times of the year.

In winter, belugas take shallow dives to use less energy and eat food like shrimp and octopus.

In summer, belugas take deeper and longer dives that require more energy, but target high quality food like arctic cod.

Their flexibility in dive behavior means that they can respond to changes in their habitats and the type of food that are available.
