My name is Deanna Sokoloski and I work for Fisheries and Oceans Canada in the Canadian Hydrographic Service.
We are responsible for a multitude of navigational products and services to ensure safe navigation within Canadian waters.
In the Ottawa office, my role is to support the Geodyssey team by means of producing maps, providing geographic analysis and consolidating data.
Our team works closely together which allows me to work on innovative projects in my daily work as our workload and scope grows.
One of the main projects that I've been a part of is the territorial sea baseline initiative.
The goal of this project is to update Canada's maritime limits and boundaries and that begins with compiling many different sources to select the best representation of our most seaward land extents.
Understanding our boundaries is important for resource development as well as knowing where different people can fish for different types of species, where they're allowed to do different types of activities within our waters as well.
I love my job which I'm really happy about because everyday it's something different.
Whether it's daily or weekly, I'm working on new projects, I love working on urgent request because I love knowing that somebody really needs the work that I'm going to produce.
I love that aspect of it and it's not the same day in and day out, it's always something different.
