Fishackathon

In 2017, Fisheries and Oceans Canada provided $40,000 via the Science Partnership Fund to support public engagement in a major science and technology software coding event, Fishackathon 2018, the world's largest environmentally-themed hackathon competition. Fishackathon is organized and produced by HackerNest, a Canadian non-profit organization based in Toronto, dedicated to building tech communities around the world. The purpose of Fishackathon is to use technology to find creative solutions to make the world's fisheries and oceans more sustainable and equitable. The 2018 event "challenges sets" had three themes: Sustainability, Marketplace and Enforcement. Nearly 3500 coders tackled the challenges in several cities in Canada and in dozens of locations around the world. Solutions that emerge from the hackathon will be based in science and data. HackerNest is considered one of the leading hackathon producers in the world; one of their distinguishing features is their focus on creating pathways to success for winning teams post-hackathon.
