Dear Mr. Wappel:

Pursuant to Standing Order 109 of the House of Commons, the Government is pleased to respond to the 7th Report of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans, entitled Atlantic Fisheries Issues: May 2003.

On behalf of the Government, I would like to thank the Committee for its report. The Government welcomes the work of the Standing Committee and has given serious consideration to the report. As identified by the Standing Committee in its report, there are a number of complex issues regarding the Atlantic fishery. DFO is committed to working closely with all fishery participants to develop long-term solutions to these issues.

I look forward to working with members of the Standing Committee on the full range of issues under the mandate of the department.

Once again, I would like to thank the members of the Committee for its work on these issues.

Yours truly,

Geoff Regan
