The Honourable William Rompkey, P.C.
Chair, Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans
The Senate of Canada
Ottawa ON K1A 0A4
I am pleased to respond, on behalf of the Government of Canada, to the Second Report of the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans’ (Senate SCOFO) entitled Controlling Canada’s Arctic Waters: Role of the Canadian Coast Guard, which was adopted May 13, 2010.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Committee for its ongoing interest in the role of the Coast Guard in safeguarding Canada’s Arctic waters, and for its continued examination of the important issues raised in this report as well as the Committee’s 2009 report, Rising to the Arctic Challenge: Report on the Canadian Coast Guard. The Government shares the Committee’s interest in ensuring Canada has a robust presence in the Arctic, and continues to demonstrate this interest through the ongoing implementation of our Northern Strategy.
The Committee made nine recommendations which touch on the mandates of: Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard, Transport Canada, Public Safety Canada and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, National Defence and the Canadian Forces, and the Privy Council Office. The Government has studied the Report and has given careful consideration to the recommendations made by the Committee. Attached you will find the Government’s Response to the Report.
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to thank the members of the Committee for their Report. I look forward to working with the Senate SCOFO on these issues in the future.
Gail Shea, P.C., M.P.
