Interim Order for the Protection of the North Atlantic Right Whales (Eubalaena Glacialis) in and Near the Shediac Valley
Transport Canada (TC) – August 10, 2020 – This notice to fish harvesters is issued in accordance with an Interim Order for the Protection of the North Atlantic Right Whales (Eubalaena glacialis) in and near the Shediac Valley.
For the past three years, North Atlantic right whales (NARW) have been aggregating in large numbers near the Shediac Valley in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Since this makes NARWs more susceptible to vessel collisions, a mandatory restricted area has been put in place in and near the Shediac Valley effective as of August 1, 2020.
This new Interim Order identifies an area of restricted navigation in and near the Shediac Valley, requiring vessels above 13 metres in length to avoid the area or, if exceptions apply, vessels required to navigate through this area must not proceed at a speed in excess of 8 knots over ground within the restricted area. The exceptions include: commercial and Indigenous fishing activities, the avoidance of immediate or unforeseen danger, assistance of a vessel in distress, pollution response operations, research, retrieval of abandoned or lost fishing gear, and enforcement activities.
