North Atlantic Right Whale - Notice of grid closure GM27, GM28, GM29, GN27, GN28, GN29, GO27, GO28, GO29, GY41, HB42

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) – July 27, 2020 – The Gulf and Quebec Regions are providing notice of grid closures and new seasonal closures due to the confirmed presence of North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW). The information presented herein is consistent with the 2020 NARW management measures previously announced by DFO.

All times listed in this document are in Atlantic Daylight Time (ADT). This document also includes all NARW related grid closures currently in effect in Canadian waters.

New closures in the Gulf of St Lawrenc

The following grids will be closing on July 30, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.:

DFO is providing a 72 hour advanced notice for these grid closures due to weather forecast. All gear affected by this notice must be removed from the closed area before the time of closure.

Following repeat detections on separate days within a 15 day period, the following grids will be placed into a seasonal closure status starting today until November 15, 2020:

General

Please refer to the corresponding Annexes for a summary of current grid closures in the following locations:

DFO asks licence holders to be vigilant during fishing activities concerning the presence of North Atlantic Right Whales. Furthermore, please be reminded that it is the responsibility of the licence holder to take into account the marine safety notices issued, amongst others, by Environment and Climate Change Canada and Transport Canada, as well as the standards and best practices in marine safety, and to take all measures to ensure safe fishing operations.

Any reference to the term “Notice” in this document means this “Notice to Fish Harvesters”. The Notice to Fish Harvesters, including its annexes, is provided for information purposes only.  In case of discrepancy between the information in the Notice to Fish Harvester and a Variation Order, the latter will prevail.

Annex 1 – Gulf of St Lawrence – Grid closure summary

The closures are in effect for the following fisheries when the fishing seasons are open in the Gulf and Quebec Regions: snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, lobster, whelk, Greenland halibut (fixed gear) and winter flounder (fixed gear). Closures will also be in effect for Atlantic halibut (fixed gear), mackerel (gillnet) and herring (gillnet) when gear is left unattended.

The closures are in effect for the following fisheries when the fishing seasons are open in the Newfoundland & Labrador: snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, lobster, whelk, Greenland halibut (fixed gear), herring (traps) and winter flounder (fixed gear). Closures will also be in effect for Atlantic halibut (fixed gear), mackerel (gillnet), herring (tuck seine) and herring (gillnet) when gear is left unattended.

The following grids will be closing on :

  • July 30, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.
    • Full grids GM27, GM28, GM29, GN27, GN28, GN29, GO27, GO28, GO29, HB42

The following grid becomes a seasonal closure on :

  • July 30, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.
    • Full grid GY41

The following grids remain temporary closed until further notice in the Gulf of St Lawrence:

  • Full grids GS37, GS38, GS39, GU42, GW34, GW35, GX41, HC39, HC40, HC41 Portion of grids GV33*, GV34*, GV35*, GW33*, GX33*, GX34*
    *from 20 fathom shallow water protocol line to deeper waters only

The following grids are seasonally closed until November 15, 2020, in the Gulf of St Lawrence:

Annex 2 – Bay of Fundy – Grid closure summary

The closures are in effect for the following fisheries when the fishing seasons are open in the Maritimes Region: Jonah crab, rock crab, whelk, hagfish, herring (gillnet), mackerel (gillnet), groundfish vessel classes B1-B220 and groundfish vessel classes C-Z when using fixed gear.

The following grids remain temporary closed until further notice in the Bay of Fundy:

  • Full grids: HQ20
  • Portion of grids HP18*, HP19*, HP20*, HQ18*, HQ19*, HR19*, HR20*
    *from shoreline line to deeper waters

Annex 3 – Roseway Basin Critical Habitat Area – Grid closure summary

There are no other grid closures related to NARW in the Roseway Basin Critical Habitat Area.

Annex 4 – Outside of the dynamic and critical habitat areas – Grid closure summary

There are no other grid closures related to NARW in the waters outside of the dynamic and critical habitat areas.
