Pacific Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (PICFI)
Built on fisheries reform work begun in response to the First Nations Panel on Fisheries and the Joint Task Group on Post-treaty Fisheries, PICFI was first launched in 2007. The Program was designed to increase First Nation (FN) access to the commercial fisheries in British Columbia, develop common and transparent rules that apply to all participants, and improve the management of the commercial fisheries through greater collaboration amongst stakeholders.
- Improve the business and operational capacities required by Aboriginal Commercial Fisheries Enterprises (CFEs) in British Columbia to successfully manage sustainable commercial fisheries;
- Improve collaboration within and between commercial fishing fleets and DFO, while engaging at the multi-sector level in the management and promotion of sustainable integrated fisheries; and
- Increase compliance with regulations and management controls in all fisheries, and improve accountability in fisheries information and decision making.
