Position Overview

The Government of Canada is currently seeking applications from diverse and talented Canadians who are interested in the following position:

Portfolio: Fisheries and Oceans

Organization: Pacific Hake Joint Management Committee

Position title: Industry representative

Position location: British Columbia

Time commitment: The time commitment for members is approximately 5-10 days per year, comprising 2-5 meetings. Meetings may be virtual and/or in person. In person meetings may take place on the West Coast of Canada or the Pacific Northwestern United States. Members may also be encouraged to collaborate outside of scheduled meetings.

Type: Part-time

Remuneration: No additional remuneration.

Duration: Up to four year term from the date of appointment.

The overarching goal of the Minister of Fisheries is to protect our three oceans, coasts, waterways, and fisheries and ensure that they remain healthy for future generations.

Background Information

The Joint Management Committee (JMC) was established under the Agreement between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Canada on Pacific Hake/Whiting (known as the ‘Agreement’) which entered into force on June 25, 2008.

The JMC is responsible for recommending a Total Allowable Catch (TAC) of Pacific Hake to the Government of Canada and the Government of the United States of America by no later than March 25 of each year. The JMC develops its recommendation by reviewing advice of the Pacific Hake’s Joint Technical Committee, Scientific Review Group, and Advisory Panel.

The JMC is comprised of eight members, four appointed by the Government of Canada and four appointed by the Government of the United States of America. The Canadian section of the JMC is currently comprised of one representative of the Government of Canada, one representative of the Province of British Columbia, and two industry representatives. Recommendations of the JMC are made by agreement of the two national sections. Essential Qualifications

Education and experience

• Either extensive fishing experience or technical and/or traditional ecological knowledge associated with the Pacific Hake fishery

• Ability to represent, broadly, the interests of Canada with respect to the Pacific Hake fishery
• Ability to work efficiently, independently, as well as within a team
• Demonstrated skills in diplomacy (e.g., respect for the interests and views of others)

Language requirements

English essential. Proficiency in both official languages would be an asset, but is not required.

Other Eligibility Factors and Conditions of Employment

In your application, it will be important that you confirm you meet the following requirements:

• Members shall not be employees of the Government of Canada.
• Members must be able to regularly attend meetings and contribute to the work of the JMC.
• Members must be willing and able to travel to various locations in Western Canada and the United States.
• Members must be Canadian Citizens.

• You will be subject to the Conflict of Interest Act.
