Position overview
The Government of Canada is currently seeking applications from diverse and talented Canadians from across
the country who are interested in the following positions:
- Portfolio: Department of Fisheries and Oceans
- Organization: Advisory Panel on Pacific Hake/Whiting
- Position title: Up to 4 positions available for the Advisory Panel
- Position location: British Columbia
- Time commitment: The time commitment for members is approximately 5-10 days per year, comprising of 2-5 meetings. Meetings may be via video/teleconference and/or in-person. In-person meetings may take place in Canada or the United States. Members may also be encouraged to collaborate outside of scheduled meetings.
- Type: Part-time
- Duration: Up to 4 year term from the date of appointment

The overarching goal of the Minister of Fisheries is to protect our 3 oceans, coasts, waterways and fisheries and ensure that they remain healthy for future generations.
Background information
The Advisory Panel was established under the Agreement between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Canada on Pacific Hake/Whiting (known as the ‘Pacific Hake Treaty’) which entered into force on June 25, 2008.
The Advisory Panel on Pacific Hake/Whiting membership is comprised of non-governmental stakeholders, and is responsible for:
- reviewing the advice of the Pacific Hake Joint Technical Committee and Scientific Review Group
- reviewing the management of fisheries of the 2 Parties during the previous year; and
- making recommendations to the Pacific Hake Joint Management Committee regarding the overall coast-wide Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for Pacific Hake
Advisory Panel members are appointed by their respective governments–the Government of Canada or the Government of the United States of America. Decisions of the Advisory Panel are made by agreement of the 2 national sections. Further details about the organization and its activities can be found on its website.

Education and experience
- Either extensive fishing experience or technical and/or traditional ecological knowledge associated with the Pacific Hake fishery
- Must be knowledgeable or experienced in the harvesting, processing, marketing, management, conservation, or research of Pacific Hake fisheries
Knowledge, abilities and skills
- Ability to represent, broadly, the interests of Canada with respect to the Pacific Hake fishery
- Ability to work efficiently, independently, as well as within a team
- Demonstrated skills in diplomacy (e.g., respect for the interests and views of others)
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
- Demonstrated ability to compromise to seek common solutions to complex issues

Language requirements
English essential. Proficiency in both official languages would be considered as an asset.
Eligibility factors and conditions of employment
In your application, it will be important that you confirm you meet the following requirements:
- Members of the Panel shall not be employees of the Government of Canada
- Members must be able to regularly attend meetings and contribute to the work of the Committee or Panel
- Members must be willing and able to travel to various locations in Western Canada and the United States
- Members must be Canadian Citizens
If you are appointed to one of these positions:
- You must comply with the Ethical and Political Activity Guidelines for Public Office Holders throughout your appointment, as a term and condition of employment.
- You will be subject to the Conflict of Interest Act.
