How do we protect our oceans?

This infographic is devided in 5 sections

First section: How do we protect our oceans?

In Canada, we use a range of tools to help keep our oceans healthy and productive. These tools allow us to limit activities to protect marine areas and their unique features. All levels of government, Indigenous Peoples, industry sectors and coastal communities play a role in marine conservation.

Second section: Marine Protected Areas (MPA) - Conserve and protect species, habitats and ecosystems - Designated under the Oceans Act.

Third section: National Marine Conservation Areas (NMCA) - Protect and conserve representative marine areas for the benefit, education and enjoyment of people - Protected under the Canada National Marine Conservation Areas Act.

Fouth section: marine National Wildlife Areas (nNWA) - Protect migratory birds, wildlife and their habitats - Protected under the Canada Wildlife Act.

Last section: Marine Refuges - Provides biodiversity conservation benefits to species, their habitats and ecosystems. These are fisheries-area closures, established under the Fisheries Act - Recognized under the Government of Canada’s Marine Other Effective Aread-Based Conservation Measures Guidance.
