Falls, slips and trips represent about 20% of the incidents reported by harbour authorities in the last 15 years

Inspect regularly

  • Inspect the property regularly, make minor repairs if needed (e.g., loose boards, handrails, ladders, etc.) and keep records.

Keep it clean

  • Keep the property clear of clutter and other obstacles
  • Powerwash surfaces to prevent buildup of slime or debris

Keep it safe

  • Establish clear safety protocols
  • Report any and all incident on harbour property to Small Craft Harbours
  • Issue regular safety reminders to users and the public

Use signage

  • If indoors:
    • Use caution wet floor signs, etc.
  • If outdoors:
    • Use rope or tape to mark tripping or slipping hazards
    • Identify obstructed views or uneven steps

Past incidents were caused by:

  • Ice and snow
  • Gaps in concrete
  • Pot holes
  • Loose or damaged boards
  • Damaged equipment
  • Wet floors
  • Wet paint
  • Loose cables or other debris, etc.

Keep an eye out and be vigilant!

WINTER SEASON

  • Keep frequently used areas clean by removing snow
  • Use salt or sand for icy surfaces (where appropriate)
