Falls, slips and trips represent about 20% of the incidents reported by harbour authorities in the last 15 years
Inspect regularly
- Inspect the property regularly, make minor repairs if needed (e.g., loose boards, handrails, ladders, etc.) and keep records.
Keep it clean
- Keep the property clear of clutter and other obstacles
- Powerwash surfaces to prevent buildup of slime or debris
Keep it safe
- Establish clear safety protocols
- Report any and all incident on harbour property to Small Craft Harbours
- Issue regular safety reminders to users and the public
Use signage
- If indoors:
- Use caution wet floor signs, etc.
- If outdoors:
- Use rope or tape to mark tripping or slipping hazards
- Identify obstructed views or uneven steps
Past incidents were caused by:
- Ice and snow
- Gaps in concrete
- Pot holes
- Loose or damaged boards
- Damaged equipment
- Wet floors
- Wet paint
- Loose cables or other debris, etc.
Keep an eye out and be vigilant!
WINTER SEASON
- Keep frequently used areas clean by removing snow
- Use salt or sand for icy surfaces (where appropriate)
