User experience research and service design

At Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), we are committed to improving our digital services, such as websites, applications and portals. To do this well, we need your help to identify barriers and opportunities.

Our team of User Experience (UX) practitioners studies how people use our various services and connects with users to learn about their experiences.

Understanding UX research

UX research is a process of designing services with and for people who use them.

It is about understanding users, their needs, and the challenges they face.

Some research activities focus on users' context and experiences such as work environment and time constraints. Others, like usability testing, focus on observing how people use existing or potential services.

UX research is different from public opinion research, which is a formal opinion-gathering method from a broad population.

Why your input matters

By sharing your experiences with our research teams, you help us create services that work for you.

You are the experts

We can't create effective services without your input. You know what you are trying to accomplish, when it is difficult, when you need workarounds, when you call a helpdesk, when something important is missing, and when something doesn't make sense, or is an accessibility barrier.

Diversity matters

As DFO provides services across Canada, we will look for research participants with diverse perspectives. We want to understand experiences across different abilities, professional context, regions and official languages. All perspectives are welcome.

When you share what works and what doesn't, you help our research team advocate for your needs throughout the service design process.
