World Oceans Day is a reminder of the important role our oceans play in our lives.
They are an important source of food and support approximately 325,000 Canadian jobs.
But our oceans are facing urgent threats, from pollution to climate change.
Canada has taken unprecedented steps to strengthen the protection of our oceans and marine species.
We have…
Invested in new scientific research on marine mammals, underwater noise, and harmful contaminants
Invested in the recovery of endangered whales, including Southern Resident Killer Whales
Committed to opening 7 new Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue stations
Funded over 60 projects to restore coastal habitats
Provided funding for 4 Northern Indigenous communities to buy search and rescue boats and equipment
Protected 8.27% of Canada’s marine and coastal areas, and
Contributed to 23 projects to remove abandoned and hazardous vessels across the country
On this World Oceans Day, let’s keep working to take care of our oceans, together.
