Our Scientists – From Coast to Coast to Coast – Lisa Loseto

Transcript

Hi my name is Lisa Loseto, I'm a research scientist here in Winnipeg at the Freshwater Institute.

I do research on Arctic marine ecosystems. My research primarily focuses on beluga whales and trying to understand their health. So I do work in the Western Arctic where I work very closely with communities, -the Inuit of the Western Arctic, Inuvialuit- who continue to lead a subsistence lifestyle and are beluga hunters.

So from the western science perspective we gather knowledge on beluga health on everything from trying to understand their diet to recognizing challenges with diseases and bringing that together with the knowledge of the community.

So bringing together their traditional knowledge of defining beluga health. So one of the reasons we're trying to understand beluga health is to give us a better sense of ecosystem health.

And this is important to Canadians as we recognize that there is a lot of change happening in the North and we want to be able to prepare to adapt to those changes and provide those tools to support long term subsistence lifestyles as well as a sustainable, healthy ecosystem.
