2007 Survey of the Recreational Cod Fishery of
Newfoundland and Labrador

Survey Highlights

In the 2007 recreational cod fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador:

  • The season was five weeks long:  July 25 to August 19 and September 29 to October 7
  • 73,425 anglers participated in the five-week fishery
    • 65,443 anglers were 16 years of age and older; 7,982 were under 16 years of age
    • 63.9% of anglers were male; 36.1% were female
    • for anglers 16 years of age and older, males averaged 51 years; females, 47 years
    • almost 42% lived on the Avalon Peninsula
  • anglers fished for an estimated 300,240 days, or for 4.1 days on average over the season
    • 58% of days were fished in NAFO sub-division 3L; followed by 25% in 3K
    • over 41% of the days fished were by residents of the Avalon Peninsula
    • over 29% of anglers fished only one day during the season
  • anglers caught an estimated 1.2 million cod
    • they caught an average of almost 16.4 fish each during the fishery
    • 47% caught 5 fish per day fished
    • 54% harvested 10 fish or less
    • they caught 4.0 cod per day fished
    • cod caught in Trinity, Notre Dame, Bonavista and Conception Bays accounted for two-thirds of the total cod harvest
