DFO Species at Risk Management Division for the Maritimes Region

MANDATE

DFO Maritimes Region established a Species at Risk Management Division in 1999 to lead the coordination of the Region's Species at Risk Program.

KEY ACTIVITIES

The Species at Risk Act (SARA) Management Division provides advice and assistance to the Sectors (i.e.Fisheries and Aquaculture Management, Science, Policy, and Oceans) that implement the regional species at risk program, which includes assessment, consultations, recovery planning, and compliance monitoring. In carrying out these activities, aimed at securing the recovery of species at risk, DFO relies on the cooperation of other government agencies, aboriginal communities, stakeholders, and the general public.

Past Public Consultations:

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) recently sought public input in the Maritimes region on the following aquatic species at risk:

  • Grey Whale (Atlantic population)
  • Dwarf Wedgemussel
  • Blue shark (Atlantic population)
  • Shortfin mako (Atlantic population)
  • White shark (Atlantic population)
  • Leatherback turtle
  • Winter skate (Eastern Scotian Shelf population, threatened)
  • Winter skate (Georges Bank/Bay of Fundy/Western Scotian Shelf population, special concern)
  • Shortnose sturgeon (special concern)
  • Striped bass (Bay of Fundy population, threatened).
  • Porbeagle shark
  • Cusk
  • Northern bottlenose whale
  • Harbour porpoise
  • North Atlantic right whale.
