Geomatics in support of ecosystem-based management
Ecosystem-based Management (EBM) requires comprehensive information about aquatic ecosystems and their potential pressures and impacts. Geospatial data and tools are required to assess and analyze the complex spatial relationships that characterize the pressures and impacts on aquatic ecosystems and to support risk/threat assessments and overall EBM implementation. This project aimed to develop an Atlantic Canada-wide coastal and marine information and assessment tool capable of integrating geospatial key ecosystem and human use data to support EBM decision-making. It would build and expand on geospatial products (web mapping applications, geospatial data, data mining functionalities, etc.), and offer the user an interface for visualizing, querying and reporting (data mining) on the state of marine ecosystems in Atlantic Canada. This project is the first step in developing an Atlantic Canada-wide geodatabase for EBM implementation on a national scale and contributes to a sustainable EBM decision-making framework for DFO.
