Oceanography
The Ocean and Aquaculture Science branch is responsible for national oceanography, climate research and aquaculture science coordination within the department’s Science Sector, as well as the Integrated Science Data Management (ISDM) which is involved in compilation and dissemination of key ocean data.
There is a considerable focus on partnership building in keeping with the strategic directions of the Science program, and on building international coordination and collaboration, particularly with respect to our oceanographic and climate science programs. Major challenges will be addressing the strengthening of our internal science programs, furthering our understanding of the oceans, responding to the implications of climate change, and addressing the orderly development of sustainable aquaculture in Canada.
Oceanography and Climate
Scientists in Oceanography and Climate conduct research on the physical and biological oceanographic phenomena along Canada's coastline. Their mandate is to provide an accurate description of the events and features found in the nearshore, on the continental shelves and in the offshore. The program includes activities in physical and biological oceanographic research, ocean climate studies and environmental descriptions.
