Canada's Role

Fisheries and Oceans represents Canada on the CBMP-Marine Steering Group, which provides overall direction on plan implementation.

In 2014, Canada developed the Canadian Arctic Marine Biodiversity Plan 2014-2017 , which describes more specifically the Canadian component of the CBMP-Marine Plan.

Canada currently:

  1. Participates on the Marine Steering Group
  2. Participates on all six Marine Expert Networks: Sea Ice Biota, Plankton, Benthos, Marine Fish, Seabirds, and Marine Mammals
  3. Co-leads the Plankton Expert Network
  4. Leads CBird, which fulfills the role of the Seabird Expert Network

Canadian scientists from various institutions and holding the best expertise in Canada participate on the Marine Steering Group and Expert Networks. These institutions include Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Environment Canada, Canadian Museum of Nature, Université Laval, and Université du Québec à Rimouski.

The Canadian National Network was established to support Canada's role at the international level. Membership is composed of Canadian Expert Network members, northern co-management boards, and the national Inuit organization Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK). The breadth of expertise and involvement illustrates the importance and collaborative nature of the work being undertaken and provides a forum for integrating and reporting across trophic levels and disciplines, and for contributing to national priorities.
