Canadian Freshwater Aquaculture Symposium

Despite the enormous potential to become a major force in the agri-food sector within the interior of Canada, the freshwater aquaculture sector has demonstrated little to no growth over the last five years. Growth has been significantly impeded by concerns related to the potential negative environmental impact of fish culture practices. To date, efforts to identify and resolve the developmental challenges to freshwater aquaculture have largely been addressed at a regional level. This approach, although producing some benefits, has not been functionally effective or efficient. To facilitate a broader, national approach to addressing freshwater aquaculture issues, a Canadian Freshwater Aquaculture Symposium was incorporated into the Aquaculture Canada 2004 Conference, held in Quebec City from October 17 to 20, 2004. This symposium brought together, for the first time, freshwater aquaculture researchers and industry representatives from across Canada, as well as invited speakers from outside Canada, where the freshwater aquaculture industries are better developed. Proceedings from the Freshwater Aquaculture Symposium will be published as a stand-alone document.
