COOGER Objectives
The Centre for Offshore Oil, Gas and Energy Research (COOGER) has the following objectives under its Terms of Reference:
- Facilitate and co-ordinate research programs in environmental and oceanographic research relating to oil and gas activities and Fisheries and Oceans Canada mandates.
- Establish research priorities addressing current and emergent issues related to oil and gas exploration and production.
- Improve the quality of science by fostering research collaborations, minimizing research duplication and seeking out new funds to support research on offshore oil and gas environmental issues.
- Promote collaborative programs with international research agencies with common interests and an environmental focus on offshore oil and gas activities.
- Encourage the sharing of environmental and oceanographic knowledge between Fisheries and Oceans Canada and external research partners in industry, academia and other governmental agencies. COOGER research will be available for use by external and internal clients.
- Provide scientific knowledge to be used by resource managers for the formulation of improved regulatory guidelines to ensure safe and environmentally sound management of offshore oil and gas operations.
