Bridging Two Cultures Through Climate Variability Study

This diagram shows how the MOC conveyer belt of ocean currents works. Warm waters, in red, carry heat northward into polar regions. Once cool, the water becomes more dense and sinks, flowing southward via deepwater currents shown in blue. Upwelling occurs in equatorial regions of the Pacific. (Diagram courtesy G. Holloway, DFO Institute of Ocean Sciences.)
