Fisheries Production

Working independently and in collaboration with other federal departments, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, Canadian and U.S. universities, state and provincial natural resource agencies, and private organizations, this group examines how various stressors affect fish communities in lakes and streams. Experimental manipulation studies are under way in a series of small natural lakes and ponds in decommissioned gravel pits/quarries to examine the effects of changes in habitat supply on fish community attributes. Other research initiatives include examining the efficacy of non-chemical means of controlling sea lamprey abundance, such as compensatory responses in stock-recruitment relationships, and the effects of sea lamprey barrier dams on other fish communities.
