Marine Transportation

Marine transportation industries bring vital social and economic benefits to all Canadians, especially to those living in coastal communities.

Activities such as port and vessel operations and shipbuilding/boat building have long created jobs for coastal residents. Today, coastal communities large and small are finding new economic opportunities in tourism. Activities range from small eco-tourism operations to large cruise ships.

Canada’s marine transportation industries are innovating, providing benefits to all Canadians and other industry sectors.

Marine Safety and Environmental Policies

Canada is a major supporter of the work of the International Maritime Organization, the United Nations’ agency responsible for improving maritime safety and preventing pollution caused by ships. As such, Canada’s marine safety and environmental policies are consistent with international maritime law.
