Coastal Restoration Fund: Projects in Prince Edward Island

Development of a Coastal Restoration Program for Prince Edward Island

Recipient: PEI Watershed Alliance

Project achievements: This island-wide project focused on improving habitat within estuaries and migratory corridors for species, such as Atlantic salmon and char.

Together with other PEI watershed groups, Indigenous groups and partners, the project addressed the impacts of historical developments and engaged in capacity building to improve the coastal health of the region.

Salt marsh restoration included the successful transplantation of cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) from healthy sections of river marsh. Area restructuring and naturalization has allowed for the migration of fish species and subsequent spawning success.

Fund allocation: $2,060,206 over 5 years
