Marine Protected Area Planning: Public Open Houses

Fisheries and Oceans Canada Maritimes Region is holding public open houses as a way to obtain input from stakeholders, First Nations and Aboriginal organizations as well as the general public on the Marine Protected Area (MPA) identification process in the Scotian Shelf Bioregion.

In 2010, Canada signed an international agreement committing to have 10% of its coastal and marine areas protected by the year 2020. DFO is leading an effort to identify and select future MPAs. The process for identifying future coastal MPAs will begin with a focus on the 54 Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) around the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia and the Bay of Fundy (Figure 1).
