Member of Parliament Gerald Keddy Presents 2011 Small Craft Harbours Prix d'Excellence to the Harbour Authority of Little Dover
Halifax, Nova Scotia –Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore – St. Margaret’s, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, today presented the Harbour Authority of Little Dover with a 2011 Small Craft Harbours Prix d’Excellence.
“The Government of Canada is pleased to recognize members of the Harbour Authority of Little Dover for their significant contribution to their harbour and community,” said Mr. Keddy. “The members of this group are an excellent example of the many tireless volunteers who work so hard to manage fishing harbours across the country.”
“Our Government is committed to keeping fishing harbours safe and accessible for the thousands of families whose livelihoods depend on them,” said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. “We have made the largest investments in small craft harbours in a generation, and we are working to ensure a sustainable future for Canada’s commercial fishery.”
The Harbour Authority received the national award, under the category of Environmental Stewardship, for successfully improving waste management in the fishing industry and encouraging fishers to bring waste ashore and recycle. Clean Nova Scotia and the Small Craft Harbours Program also participated in the pilot project.
Herbert Harnish, President of the Harbour Authority of Little Dover, accepted the Prix d’Excellence award on behalf of the Harbour Authority at a ceremony in Sherbrooke Village, Nova Scotia.
“As a result of the program, commercial fishers and wharf users are more aware of the impact they have on the local environment,” said Mr. Harnish. “More waste is being brought ashore than in previous years and community members are working together to improve the health of their harbour.”
The Prix d’Excellence is awarded annually to celebrate the exemplary contributions made by harbour authorities in meeting the objectives of the Small Craft Harbours Program. The award recognizes teams and individuals who have made significant contributions to their harbours and their communities.
