Halifax, Nova Scotia –The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, has announced that the federal government will invest $5 million in repair and improvement projects at small craft harbours across Canada.
This funding is part of the $80 million in regular funding for the Small Craft Harbours Program this year, which is in addition to the $200 million provided for small craft harbours under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Our Government understands that safe, efficient harbours are essential. They benefit fishers and their communities,” said Minister Shea. “By funding repairs and improvement projects at harbours across the country, we are creating and protecting jobs and investing in the future of our fishing industry.”
The repair projects will be undertaken at:
The Government’s investment also includes a contribution of $200,000 towards technical studies to identify the location best suited for small vessels and commercial fishing harbour facilities in Saint John, New Brunswick.
These projects are being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for local users. Close cooperation between DFO and harbour authorities allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
