Promising Future for the Canadian Fishing and Sealing Industry in China

BEIJING, CHINA – The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today concluded a successful visit to the People’s Republic of China aimed at promoting new markets for Canadian fish, seafood and seal products. Minister Shea met with senior officials from China’s State Oceanic Administration, and the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Agriculture to discuss topics of mutual interest.

“This trip signifies our strong commitment to Canadian sealers who are involved in a sustainable and humane activity that focuses on full use of the animal,” said Minister Shea. “Our meetings with Chinese senior officials resulted in a commitment to work together towards lifting current restrictions on the import into China of seal products.”

Minister Shea also initiated a process, at China's request, to update the existing 1993 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Fisheries and Oceans Canada and China’s State Oceanic Administration, as well as securing an agreement to develop a new MOU on fisheries cooperation.

“The year 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and China,” said Minister Shea. “China is Canada’s second largest trading partner and the world’s largest consumer of fish and seafood, representing great potential for Canadian products. We look forward to future collaborations.”

The Government of Canada encourages and supports the development of new markets for Canadian fish, seafood, and seal products, both at home and internationally. Through these successes, the Government is creating important economic opportunities for Canadians, Canadian industries and coastal communities.
