Canada’s Economic Action Plan at Work in Manitoba

Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba – Local workers and businesses will benefit from a major new investment in small craft harbours in Manitoba, James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk -- Interlake, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.
“Our Government recognizes that harbours are very important to the communities that they serve,” said MP Bezan. “With Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government’s significant investment in our small craft harbours will create local jobs right away to assist communities in weathering the current economic storm. The funding being provided will ensure the safety of all users and provide for ongoing maintenance of our harbour facilities.”
The Small Craft Harbours Program is one of many job-creating investments contained in Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Through this plan, communities across Canada will receive $200 million over two years to accelerate harbour repair and maintenance, as well as undertake dredging projects. This new investment is in addition to already budgeted funding of approximately $80 million for the Small Craft Harbours Program for this year.
In Manitoba, $2.5 million is being provided under the federal government’s Canada’s Economic Action Plan for projects at core commercial fishing harbours over the next two years. This is in addition to $400,000 in regular program funding being provided this year in Manitoba.
The federal investments in small craft harbours will allow the following projects to be undertaken:
Wharf repairs will be carried out at:
- Easterville;
- Gull Harbour;
- Little Grindstone; and
- Matheson Island.
At Victoria Beach, the concrete deck will be repaired.
Winnipeg Beach will benefit from the reconstruction of floating wharves.
Improvements of the harbour facilities are scheduled for Poplar River and the electrical system will be upgraded at the Gimli harbour.
In addition, minor repairs will be carried out at several other harbours.
These projects are being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours Program, in close collaboration with the harbour authorities that manage and operate the facilities for local users. This close co-operation with clients allows the federal government to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada, in support of commercial fish harvesters.
