SELKIRK, MB – James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will invest in the repair of the commercial fishing harbour located at Berens River, Manitoba.  This federal harbour supports one of Manitoba’s larger commercial fishing communities.

“This project demonstrates our government’s commitment to maintain a system of safe harbours which enable fish harvesters and communities to make the most of their economic opportunities,” said James Bezan.  “The completion of this project will be of direct benefit to the fish harvesters and the residents of Berens River.”

This project involves the replacement of deteriorated portions of the timber crib wharf.  In addition, the work includes a small expansion to accommodate the new transport vessel utilized to get fish to market.  The work is to be completed prior to the end of March 2009.

Funding of $400,000 has been allocated to this project, which is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the Berens River Harbour Authority.  Harbour Authorities manage and operate the facilities for commercial fish harvesters and other local users.  This close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fish harvesters.

Small craft harbours are critical for the commercial fishing industry and communities where commercial fishing is carried out. Budget 2009 provides up to $200 million over two years to accelerate the repair and maintenance and undertake necessary dredging at core commercial fishing harbours across Canada. This is in addition to the remaining commitment from Budget 2008 of $5 million for 2009-10 for repairs and environmental cleanup at recreational and non-core fishing harbours to permit their transfer to interested parties.
