WIARTON, ON - The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today federal government funding for small craft harbour facilities in Wiarton, Meaford and Howdenvale, Ontario.
“The federal government is committed to maintaining safe facilities for the wide range of harbour users,” said Minister Hearn. “We realize the economic importance of these facilities to the local communities and keeping them safe protects Canadians as a whole.”
The Wiarton, Meaford and Howdenvale harbours, located on the Bruce Peninsula, which separates Lake Huron from Georgian Bay, will benefit from funding totalling $280,000. The proposed work at Wiarton Marina consists of adding medium-sized stone on the outer side of the breakwater to provide added protection to the structure and the marina basin behind it. At Meaford, located on the southern shore of Georgian Bay, the federal government provided funding for recently completed dredging at the mouth of the Bighead River. At Howdenvale’s harbour, rehabilitation of the wharf will involve repairs to the timber deck, fenders, stringers, and piles of the wharf structure.
Plans and specifications for Wiarton Marina and Howdenvale are currently being finalized by Public Works and Government Services Canada and will be followed by a call for tenders. It is anticipated that on-site work will start this fall.
The Government of Canada understands the importance of small craft harbours to communities across the country. Since February 2006, the permanent annual funding for the Small Craft Harbours Program has been increased by $20 million, with a further $10 million commitment made in Budget 2008 over two years for repairs and environmental cleanup at recreational and non-core fishing harbours to permit the transfer of these harbours to interested parties.- 30 -
