November 29, 2007 (Updated June 25, 2008)
On November 29, 2007 the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, introduced in Parliament a new Bill to modernize the 139-year-old Fisheries Act.
Bill C-32 aims to provide a more predictable, stable and transparent fisheries and fish habitat management system where fish harvesters, and others with an interest in the fisheries, can share in the management of this important public resource.
Modernizing the Fisheries Act remains a legislative priority. The Government of Canada intends to present Bill C-32 in Parliament for Second Reading when the House returns in the Fall.
Information about the progress of Bill C-32 will continue to be posted on the DFO website as it becomes available.
The government is committed to further involvement of stakeholders, and your feedback and comments are always welcome. Please send them to FALP@dfo-mpo.gc.ca. DFO officials also remain available to provide further information on Bill C-32 and what it will mean for the management of fisheries and fish habitat.
