Convictions Under the Fisheries Act

QUÉBEC – Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec Region, has released a list of Magdalen Islands Area fishers fined by Judge Henri-Rosaire Desbiens on December 9, 2010, for various violationsof the Fisheries Act.

The total amount of the fines imposed on the fishers is $5,250. The offenders are:

Israel Boudreau (Îles-de-la-Madeleine)	Possession of egg-bearing female lobsters.	$1,500
Jean-François Cyr Jean-Charles Thériault (Îles-de-la-Madeleine)	Possession of lobster under the minimum legal size.	$500 (J.-F. Cyr) $1,500 (J.-C. Thériault)
Nelson Langford (Îles-de-la-Madeleine)	Failure to bleed seals for one minute before skinning.	$250
Edwin Quinn (Îles-de-la-Madeleine)	Fishing Atlantic halibut during closed time.	$1,000
Rosaire Richard (Îles-de-la-Madeleine)	Failure to palpate a seal’s cranium to confirm that it has been crushed.	$500

The Department has a mandate to protect and conserve fishery resources and is ever vigilant in its efforts to prevent poaching of marine resources.
