Lobster Fishery Violations – Eastern New Brunswick

February 4, 2010

Tracadie-Sheila (N.-B.) – The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Gulf Region, today announced the sentence imposed on a New Brunswick lobster harvester for violating the lobster fishery regulations.

Jules Joseph Savoie of Baie Ste-Anne in New Brunswick, pleaded guilty in Richibucto Provincial Court on January 19, 2010, to possession of 30 undersized lobsters. Provincial Court Judge Micheal McKee imposed a $3,000 fine to Jules Savoie while prohibiting him from fishing the first two days of the 2010 lobster fishing season in Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 25.

On September 14, 2009, while conducting an inspection of lobster catches at the Pointe-Sapin wharf, fishery officers discovered the 30 undersized lobsters in Savoie’s lobster catch.

DFO is committed to the conservation and protection of marine resources in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Anyone wishing to report suspicious fishing activities may do so by contacting their nearest DFO office, or by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
