Budget 2009 was tabled in the House of Commons on January 27, 2009 and confirmed the Government of Canada’s commitment to strengthening the Canadian economy through targeted investments in infrastructure and capital projects.

Budget 2009 provides Fisheries and Oceans Canada with almost $400 million in areas where we can have the most direct, beneficial impact on the Canadian economy. As a federal department with a strong presence throughout Canadian communities and waters, DFO’s investments will strengthen local economies, create jobs and enhance communities.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will invest $175 million in the Canadian Coast Guard to procure 68 new small vessels, 30 environmental barges and to undertake major repair work on 40 of its large vessels. Another $200 million will be for projects at core commercial fishing harbours across Canada and up to $17 million additional to accelerate the construction of the Pangnirtung Harbour in Nunavut.

The Government of Canada will also invest an additional $250 million over two years to modernize federal laboratories across the country, a portion of which will be put toward DFO’s Salmon Enhancement Program facilities throughout British Columbia.

A number of other measures in the Budget will benefit Canada's fishery sector and coastal communities. Key among these will be the two-year, $1-billion Community Adjustment Fund to support economic diversification in coastal communities affected by the declining global demand for seafood. Fisheries and Oceans Canada will work with regional development agencies to invest in initiatives that will help the fishing industry adjust to new market demands.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will expedite these funding initiatives so that they may directly benefit local economies, creating jobs for Canadians and strengthening communities.
