"Voyages and Explorations of Samuel de Champlain" Commemorative Map
May, 2008
Based on the maps compiled by Champlain, the commemorative map incorporates images representing Champlain’s various talents as an explorer, hydrographer, cartographer, illustrator, ethnographer, author and navigator.
The map contains the following:
- A depiction of Champlain’s voyages and explorations from 1603 to 1615
- Reference to his 23 Atlantic crossings
- Names of the First Nations at the time of Champlain
- Former place names in use at the time of Champlain and their modern-day equivalents
- Canoe routes used by First Nations at the time
- Annotations of historical facts taken from Champlain’s writings
- Identification of the sites mapped by Champlain
- First detailed map of Québec published in Champlain’s travelogue in 1613 (Voyages du Sieur de Champlain Xaintongeois, capitaine ordinaire pour le Roy, en la marine [1604-1612])
- Illustration of Québec’s first dwelling taken from Champlain’s travelogues
- Excerpt from the 1612 map of New France, illustrating fruit and vegetables to show Champlain’s interest in agriculture
- Illustration of Innu and Abenaki couples taken from the 1612 map (Carte géographique de la Nouvelle Franse faictte par le sieur de Champlain Saint Tongois capitaine ordinaire pour le Roy en la marine). Champlain added portraits of Indian peoples to illustrate descriptions made in his writings
- Illustration of a Huron-Wendat woman taken from Champlain’s travelogues published in 1619 (Voyages et descouvertes faites en la Nouvelle France, depuis l’année1615 jusques à la fin de l’année 1618)
- Excerpt from Traitté de la marine et du devoir d’un bon marinier, published in appendix to his last travelogue entitled Voyages de la Nouvelle France occidentale, dicte Canada faits par le Sieur de Champlain in 1632
- Illustration of Champlain’s final map published in 1632
The map is printed on both sides in English and French and measures 84 cm X 119 cm.
